On 23-26 August, Berehove hosted a training for winemakers entitled "Wines of the Silver Land Geographical Indication: Methodological, Technological and Legal Aspects".

The training event was organised by the European project "Institutional and Policy Reform for Smallholder Agriculture" (IPRSA) and the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO). It was attended by about 30 small winemakers from Zakarpattia region.

At the invitation of the organisers, the event was joined by Marianna Gotra, Head of the Tourism and Resorts Department of the Transcarpathian Regional State Administration, and Oleksandr Koval, an expert on geographical indications.

Over the course of four days, the trainers covered a range of relevant topics, the understanding of which will help winegrowers to work more efficiently, adapt more quickly to legislative changes in the industry in the context of European integration, and gain a deeper understanding of modern technological aspects of wine production.

The first two days of the training were dedicated to production technologies. In particular, they talked about white wine processing: the peculiarities of ripening white grape varieties, their chemical composition, harvesting, transportation, sorting, modern processing equipment and other important topics.

The second block of the training covered the legislative and legal aspects of winemakers' work. In particular, the participants were presented with the recently adopted draft law 9139 "On Grapes and Viticulture Products", which was developed with the support of the IPRSA project. This is one of the key documents for the future of Ukrainian viticulture, which synchronises the norms of sectoral legislation with the requirements of international rules for the production of viticulture and winemaking products and various provisions of the European Union.

This important European integration document for Ukraine introduces requirements for the production and circulation of wines, viticulture and winemaking products, and flavoured wine products with geographical indications similar to current rules in the EU.

For Transcarpathian winemakers, all of these topics are relevant in the context of work on the registration of the Wines of the Silver Land geographical indication. Together with the experts, they discussed the work plan for the specification for the registration of this geographical indication, the prospects for wine and gastronomic tourism based on geographical indications in the Transcarpathian region, as well as possible promotional activities for the Wines of the Silver Land.
