On 11 August, a mini-sculpture dedicated to the Little Mermaid, the heroine of Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale, was unveiled in Uzhhorod.

The sculpture, created by Roman Murnik and the 57th in Uzhhorod, is located on the supports of the pedestrian bridge. The Little Mermaid is a reminder of the Uzhhorod Regatta and will be the first mooring for rafting participants when the festival resumes, the Zaholovok.

According to the initiator of the installation of the mini-sculpture of the Little Mermaid in Uzhhorod, the famous "professor from the trench", president of the Transcarpathian Tourist Organisation Fedir Shandor, the opening of the mini-monument is dedicated to several events.

"110 years ago, a mini-sculpture of the famous Little Mermaid was unveiled in Copenhagen, and on 11 August, Hans Christian Andersen was buried in Copenhagen. In addition, tomorrow is International Youth Day. All of this fits into the new bronze mini-sculpture. The Little Mermaid is sitting on one of the rafts of the Uzhhorod Regatta. This idea was presented by sculptor Roman Murnyk, and thus the Little Mermaid will be one of the elements of the regatta. It is a symbol of goodness, childhood, and when the river rises, it will also be a dimension of the big water in Uzhhorod," said Fedir Shandor.

The sculpture was installed on one of the pillars of the pedestrian bridge, so the Little Mermaid will be seen up close only when the water in the Uzh recedes. "The most interesting things are always hard to reach, you still have to get to the Little Mermaid somehow. The most courageous lovers of quests or beautiful photos with mini-sculptures will have a challenge to find her. And during the Uzhhorod Regatta, it will be the place of the first mooring," the professor adds.

Serhiy Denysenko, the organiser of the Uzhhorod Regatta, said: "Indeed, our Uzhhorod regatta is gaining symbols and traditions. Unfortunately, for the second year in a row we have not held this festival because of the war. But we are developing ideas and I think that as soon as the situation allows us, we will return to the regatta.

"The Little Mermaid is an element that adds to the attractiveness of the regatta and exists beyond the event itself, because the regatta takes place once a year. But things like the Transcarpathian Fleet lighthouse (a mini-sculpture of Svoboda) and the Little Mermaid are there all the time and remind both Uzhhorod residents and guests of the event, but at the same time they are interesting elements in their own right," says Denysenko.

The Little Mermaid became the 57th mini-sculpture in Uzhhorod. According to Fedir Shandor, several more interesting sculptures will be unveiled in the city by the end of the year.
