Museum of the history of salt mines
Museum of the history of salt mines introduces the methods of salt extraction in our region at different times and historical epochs. It is located not far from the Solotvyno salt mine, which is one of the largest in Europe (salt reserves here amount to 300 million tonnes, the thickness of the industrial development layer is 300 metres). Until the end of the 18th century, when the first industrial mine was built, salt was extracted from the Solotvyno deposit using a primitive open-pit method: by digging regular pits up to 20 m deep, and later cone-shaped pits up to 150 m deep. The salt was brought to the surface in buffalo skins, cut into regular squares, stamped with the miner's personal mark and handed over to a royal official. The working conditions were extremely difficult, and the remuneration was minimal.
Visiting the museum, you can learn not only about such interesting historical facts, but also see the tools, clothes of miners, and various engineering structures for salt extraction.
