"Chronicles of Palanok Castle

On 10 November, a new exhibition "Chronicles of Palanok Castle" was opened!

The Mukachevo History Museum was established in 1989 on the basis of the Mukachevo History Branch of the Transcarpathian Museum of Local Lore. Most of the museum exhibitions are housed in the Palanok Castle. The castle is one of the main objects of historical and cultural heritage of the Transcarpathian region, a national historical monument of Ukraine and one of the most valuable preserved monuments of historical and military architecture of the XIV-XVII centuries, a model of medieval fortification art that combines styles of different historical eras.

The museum covers an area of more than 3,500 square metres and has more than 8,000 museum exhibits.

Exhibitions in Palanok Castle:

  • Exposition of the history of Mukachevo
  • Chronicles of Palanok Castle
  • Ethnography exhibition
  • Exposition of antiquities
  • The exposition of the Rakoczy family
  • Ferenc Kazinczy Memorial Room
  • Memorial room to Prince Fyodor Koriatovich
  • Exhibition of materials about the repressions of the communist totalitarian regime in Transcarpathia
  • ATO Museum of Military Glory
  • Art gallery
  • Author's museum of Vladimir Nikita
  • Ecumenical church
  • Torture chamber.

The exposition tells the story of the castle from the time of its first mention to the present day in an interactive and engaging format. The concept is aimed at highlighting three main elements: the development of the castle in different eras, events and figures that influenced its history and development. Each element of the interactive design encourages tactile learning of history and transforms the visitor from a passive observer to an active participant in the exhibition.

The exposition offers visitors to immerse themselves in historical events of the past: to feel like a defender of the walls, to try to take the castle by storm or to become a medieval architect and builder. The interactive block of the digital exhibition "Chronicles of Palanok Castle" will be useful for this purpose, combining texts, graphic materials, 3D reconstructions, images and much more in a convenient and accessible form, which can be touched literally on touch screens.

The exhibition was created in cooperation with the projects "Chronicles of Palanok Castle" and "Smart Museum - Modern Forms of Presenting Cultural Heritage"

The project "Smart Museum - Modern Forms of Presentation of Cultural Heritage", HUSKROUA/1702/3.1/0026 is implemented with the support of the European Union within the framework of the European Neighbourhood Instrument Cross-border Cooperation Programme Hungary-Slovakia-Romania-Ukraine 2014-2020.
