Mukachevo Historical Museum

Mukachevo Historical Museum  is located in Mukachevo's Palanok Castle, one of the few surviving to this day.

The castle is a valuable monument of history and military architecture of the 14th and 17th centuries. For centuries, it served to protect trade and military-strategic routes. Throughout its history, it has belonged to many rulers. The castle has withstood many sieges. The longest of them was from 1685 to 1688, organised by the Austrian imperial troops; the fortress was bravely defended by Princess Ilona Zrini. From 1703 to 1711, the castle was a stronghold of the national liberation war of the Hungarian people under the leadership of the Transylvanian Prince Ferenc II Rákóczi, in which the rebel Rusyns, the Kurucs, took an active part.

The history of the castle and Transcarpathia is recreated in detail in the expositions of ethnography, nature and antiquities. Works of art, including ancient icons, are exhibited in 12 halls. There are several memorial rooms and a collection of Transcarpathian Easter eggs.
