Khust castle

In 1191, Hungarian kings finished building the fortress, which had been under construction for over a hundred years. In 1242, a battle with the Mongol-Tatars took place near the castle, and the fortress was destroyed.

In 1511, the castle became the property of Baron Gabor Pereni, and after 1526 it became the property of the Principality of Transylvania. In the sixteenth century, the castle was repeatedly fought over by the Austrian Empire and Transylvania.

In 1661-1662, the fortress was constantly stormed by Turkish troops.

During the Liberation War of 1703-1711, the castle garrison joined the rebels led by Ferenc II Rákóczi.

In 1766, during a great thunderstorm over Khust, lightning struck the powder tower of the castle and set it on fire, causing a large part of the fortress to burn down.
