Arpad Line Museum
One of the most attractive sites in Kolochava is the Arpad Line Historical and Military Museum. Here you will see a unique collection of military equipment from the Second World War and visit real bunkers. To date, 4 bunkers out of 34 have been recreated, with more than two thousand exhibits. All exhibits are authentic.
Hungary began building a defensive line in 1940 to protect itself from the advancing Soviet forces. The natural terrain of the Carpathians allowed for the construction of military fortifications from which artillery fire could stop the enemy's movement. To this end, about thirty reinforced concrete bunkers were built in Kolochava. Fortified earthen trenches stretched from the firing points to the bunkers. Telephone lines were laid in them, and firing points were equipped with automatic small arms, mortars, grenades and light anti-tank guns.
The Tereblya River was blocked in several places by several rows of concrete pyramids.
In the Kolochava Arpad Line Museum, you will learn in detail about the history of the Second World War in Zakarpattia. Restorers of the Arpad Line have collected several thousand military exhibits in the museum complex.
The first bunker of the museum is called the command bunker. Inside, everything is arranged as it used to be. Machine guns, assault rifles and shotguns, ammunition and grenades, helmets and a long-range vision device, a flamethrower and fire extinguisher, a power cable and dozens of other devices for war. All of these are original models.
There is a defensive bunker nearby.
A few tens of metres away, in concrete shackles, there is a bunker hospital. Beds in three tiers, sets of medical equipment, the smell of medicines and preparations, bromine and iodine. You can't stay here for long, but it is quite possible to help the wounded and prepare them for evacuation.
After walking a hundred metres to the side, you will come to the kashovars' abode - the boiler room. In this bunker, the attention is drawn to the camping spur kitchen, which was used in the Hungarian army. There is a long table with stainless steel plates and spoons and copper cups on it. There are benches on both sides of the table. The food is stored in bags with the date 1942 on them.
The Arpad Line Museum includes Europe's longest restored one hundred-metre defensive line.
The museum is open every day, without breaks and weekends, from 08:00 to 18:00 by appointment only.
