Chamber exhibition "Winter fun. Skates" in Uzhhorod Castle

22 December 2023 The exhibition "Winter Fun. Skates" was opened by the museum's director Olha Shumovska, who emphasised that the creation of small exhibitions using original exhibits from the museum's stocks is becoming very popular among visitors. This year, researchers from the Department of History and Local Lore decided to showcase Christmas and New Year traditions in the region in a different way, namely by presenting skates from different periods. There are not many of them, but their history is interesting. The oldest item is a skate made of a bovine bone, curved on the inside, with rounded holes at both ends for attaching to shoes. The discovery was made by the famous historian and archaeologist Tyvodar Lehotskyi in 1880 during archaeological excavations in Berehove. It was transferred to the museum in 1950. The skates are women's skates on a wooden platform, attached to the leather forefoot with lacing. They were used in 1920 in the village of Dovhe in Irshava district by the Simkanych family. Another skate, the Scout model, made at the Czech factory Katscher, belonged to Dmytro Klysi in the 1940s. Interesting men's leather skates from the 1960s, judging by the condition of the exhibit, were actively used, as well as models of children's skates and shaped white women's skates from the 1970s, donated by the family of A. Khoma. The originals are supplemented by photographs and a video by former Uzhhorod resident György Sharody "Uzhhorod in the Winter of 1972".

The chamber exhibition "Winter Entertainment. Skates" will run until 20 January 2024.
