According to legend, it was built in the 12th century by knights-monks of the powerful Knights Templar. The stronghold was destroyed in the early 18th century during the uprising of Ferenc II R\u00e1k\u00f3czi, but the mythical Templars and their hidden treasures still haunt many curious researchers and travellers. It is reliably known that in the 16th century the castle belonged to the famous Dobo family. Istv\u00e1n Dob\u00f3, the national hero of Hungary, became famous for the heroic defence of Eger Castle against the Turks. In 1552, he led 1,935 soldiers who withstood the 120,000-strong army of the Ottoman Empire. After this courageous victory, Emperor Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary presented Istvan Dobo with thousands of Turkish prisoners and the lands of Serednya. The Turks restored Serednyansky Castle and dug almost 5 km of tunnel in the rock. Locals say that they dug the dungeons until the last prisoner died. Perhaps that is why they are still called Turkish.
