It is located not far from the Solotvyno salt mine, which is one of the largest in Europe (salt reserves here amount to 300 million tonnes, the thickness of the industrial development layer is 300 metres). Until the end of the 18th century, when the first industrial mine was built, salt was extracted from the Solotvyno deposit using a primitive open-pit method: by digging regular pits up to 20 m deep, and later cone-shaped pits up to 150 m deep. The salt was brought to the surface in buffalo skins, cut into regular squares, stamped with the miner's personal mark and handed over to a royal official.
