Exhibition of crocheted products "Lace of Hope"

Skansen once again pleases visitors with an exhibition from the museum's stock collection!
For connoisseurs of the material culture of the region, the museum's aspirant hosts an exhibition of crocheted products "Lace of Hope".
Crochet is a popular type of domestic activity for women in Ukraine, which involves the manual creation of cloth, lace or clothing from threads using a crochet hook. It has existed since ancient times, but due to the fragility of materials, ancient examples of this type of folk art have not survived to this day.
Literary sources attest to the existence of knitted items as early as the 11th century. Works of later times (19th - 20th centuries) are kept in museum collections, including the Transcarpathian Museum of Folk Architecture and Life.
The material used was hand-spun linen, hemp, wool, and later factory-made (cotton, wool, silk metal and synthetic) threads. Hand knitting was done with a hook (wooden, bone or metal).
In our region, hand knitting techniques are quite common in the interiors of homes. Women and girls in both rural and urban families have been engaged in this fairly common type of craft and artistic creativity for centuries. In the process of improvement, this art has acquired numerous variants of weaving techniques. Using a variety of hand knitting techniques, the artists made products such as napkins, tablecloths, curtains for windows and doors, decorative elements for the buffet, decorating towels for clothes, etc.
The exhibition from the collection of our museum features crocheted items from different parts of Transcarpathia. Various decorative additions to the interior were widespread, which made the houses cosy. Here are the following items: small and large napkins (different in shape); tablecloths; lace used in sideboards; long napkins for the buffet; elements of crochet used on doors; curtains for windows.
The exhibition is one of the variants of exhibiting traditional lace objects that could be seen in every home in the region in the mid- to late twentieth century.
